This Is Lorelei Phoenix Concert reviews
Maybe I Expected Too Much
On Saturday night, Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks, and company delivered a solid show. Preceding them were Hard Working Americans, who were decent but not to my liking. I had been excited to see This Is Lorelei live after watching most of the players on TV in various Eric Clapton's Crossroads videos. While Susan's vocals and Derek's playing met my expectations, the rest of the group was a mystery to me. There were a total of twelve musicians and singers on stage, including Susan and Derek, making it challenging to showcase each without taking away from the main attraction that drew many attendees. Unfortunately, the horn section veered off track towards the end of the main set, completely losing my interest. I found myself checking the time, wondering if it was time to leave. Although the main set continued for another 20 minutes or so, I opted to stay for the encore performance featuring "Statesboro Blues" and "Bound for Glory." I was happy I stayed, although even "Bound for Glory" felt prolonged due to the excessive solos. Susan possesses an extraordinary voice, and I particularly enjoyed the songs that highlighted her talents. Derek's skill is undeniable, as expected. Perhaps I'll stick to listening to the This Is Lorelei CDs rather than attending future shows.
